Michaux’ya telefon ettim.
Ben (Brassai): Haşhaş ve meskalin üzerine filminiz çok hoşuma gitti. Büyülü sözler ve olağanüstü görüntüler, mükemmel bir müzikle birleşerek gerçekten muhteşem bir etki yaratıyor. Bazen, biri gerçekten şaşırtıcı olabiliyor.
Michaux: Filmimi beğendiğinizi duyduğuma memnun oldum. Siz iyi bir yargıçsınız. Birlikte çalıştığım kameraman, düşüncelerimi ve “kurgumu” çok bilinçli bir biçimde gerçekleştirdi.
Ben: Bu filmin sinemalarda gösterilmemesi ve genel seyirci kitlesi tarafından görülmemiş olması beni üzüyor. Piyasaya çıkarmayı düşünmüyor musunuz?
Michaux: Evet, bu tartışma konusu. Ancak uyuşturucu bağımlısının kendisiyle, filmi takdim eden doktorun kesilmesi koşuluyla. Ama benim sesimi muhafaza ediyorlar.
Ben: Gerçekten film beş ya da altı kez gösterilmesine karşın, az kişi tarafından izlenebildi. Ben gittiğim zaman, Salle de Géographie (Coğrafya Salonu) tamamen dolmuştu. Yer bulamadım. Filmi, Jean Paulhan ve Dominique Aury’nin ayaklarının dibinde, yerde uzanarak seyrettim.
Onunla, Picasso üzerine kitabım ile ilgili olarak konuşmaya tereddüt ettim. Kitapta bazı görüşmelerimizden söz etmiş ve çeşitli yerlerde kendisine atıfta bulunmuştum. Yazmış olduğumu ona göstermek isterdim ancak siz hiç bilmezsiniz, o benden kitabın bölümlerinin yayınını engellemeyi istebilecek güçtedir.
Ben: İşgal dönemi başlayınca, Picasso’ya yaptığım ziyaretler sırasında gün be gün tuttuğum notları kullanarak Conversations avec Picasso (Picasso ile Görüşmeler) başlıklı bir kitap yazdım. Yaklaşık yirmi yıl sonra bu notları bulduğum ve yeniden okuduğum zaman, kesinlikle büyüsüne kapıldım ve işte bu, kitabı yazmaya nasıl başladığımdır. Ancak, o dönemde bir kitap yazmayı düşünmüyordum. Eğer düşünseydim, onu görmeye daha sık giderdim… yine de bol miktarda iyi materyalim vardı. Her şeyi şimdiki zaman kipinde kaleme aldım, bugün söyleniyor gibi, canlı, Picasso’nun sesini duyar gibi ve gerçekten onu görüyor gibi… Başarılı olup olmadığımı bile bilmiyorum. En azından, bu, bir düşünce idi: Bir şekilde Picasso’yu yaşama getirmek. Yanı sıra, onun üzerine, yapıtından daha fazla bir birey olarak yoğunlaşmaya karar verdim. Her görüşmeye bir tarih verilmişti. Ve, her şeyi şimdiki zaman kipinde anlatmaya başlayınca, her ziyaret, sürprizlerle ve beklenmedik olaylarla dolu hale geldi.
Michaux: Üç yüz sayfa… Bazı özetlerini okumak isterdim.
Ben: Zevkle, bilhassa sizin de olduğunuz yerleri… Bazen Picasso ile beraberdik.
Michaux: Greçekten, hepsini okumak isterdim. Bellek kısadır. Bir zaman sonra, birinin söylediğini ya da yazdığını okumak genellikle bir sürpriz olur.
Ben: Örneğin benimle Claudel üzerine konuşuyorsunuz, Saten Ayakkabı’yı (Le Sonlier de Satin) çok sevmişsiniz. Ve bir gün Picasso’dan çıkarken, bana bazı hareketlerde bulunuyorsunuz.
Michaux: Claudel… Gerçekten hatırlamıyorum.
Ben: Ben de, notlarda var… Ben, size, genç sanatçılar arasında Picasso, Braque ya da Matiss’e halef olacak benzerlerini bulmanın zor olduğunu söylüyorum. Ve siz haklı olarak, bunun asla bir “haleflik” sorunu, bir ressamların yer değiştirmesi konusu olmadığı, söz konusu yenilenmenin farklı bir biçim alacağı şeklinde karşılık veriyorsunuz. Asla değişmeyen az sayıda sembol ve tasarıma indirgenmiş, çok kısıtlı alan olduğunu düşünmüştüm. Kitabınız, tersini kanıtlıyor. Duvarların yüzeyleri, gerçekten de düşündüğümden çok daha fazlasını açığa vuruyor. Burada bazı şaşırtıcı şeyler var. Bir araya toplanınca, bütün hepsi, gerçekten değerli…”
Ve, ardından, benim elyazmalarının şişkin paketini açtım. Michaux’a atıfları ile bütün bölümleri, kendisine okumak üzere dışarı çıkardım. Ve kitabımda ortaya çıktığı gibi birazcık “Plume”ün ikiz kardeşine benzeyen Michaux karakteri, kendisini çok eğlendirdi. Ona, kitabımın çeşitli bölümlerini okudum; büyük bir ilgiyle dinledi. ]
Ben: Picasso’nun tepkileri konusunda endişelenmiyorum. Kendisine el yazmamı gösterdim ve çeşitli bölümlerini okudum; Çok hoşuna gitti. “Senin graffitilerin gibi hakikat dolu, yayınlamalısın,” dedi ve beni, cazibeli ya da yüceltilmiş değil ama hakikaten olduğu gibi tam bir portresini çekmem için cesaretlendirdi. Bu hakikate uygunluk isteği, ona kredi kazandıran bir karakter özelliğiydi. Bu özelliği, kendisini kimi zaman, diğer insanlarla zor duruma düşürse de baharı bulmaya ihtiyaç duymuyordu, saklayacak hiçbir şeyi yoktu.
Onu iki saat süresince okudum… Zaman sınırını çoktan aşmıştı.
Michaux: Birşeyin farkına vardım, Picasso üzerine yazarken gerçekten havanızdasınız. Onun hakkında, benim hakkımda olduğundan daha serbest konuşuyorsunuz… dinler dinlemez, kısa bir süre sonra izlenimim bu.
Ben: Kitap, Picasso üzerine olunca bu kaçınılmaz. Kim olursa olsun, karşılaşabildiğim etrafımdaki birkaç arkadaşını ele aldım, ancak her birinin ayrıntılı birer portresini kitaba koyarak, yapıtın dengesini bozamazdım. Belki de muhtemelen bunu, Pierre Reverdy ve Hans Reichel’inkileri yaptığım gibi yapacağım.
Michaux: Bu kadar çok şeyi hatırlamayı nasıl başardınız? Not tutuyor musunuz?
Ben: Duruma göre, bazen, çok önemli bir görüşme olduğunda ve eğer not almazsam telafisi mümkün olmayan bir kayıp olacağını hissettiğim zaman not alırım. Maalesef, hemencecik yapılmak zorunda, ve çok defa eğer zaman bulamazsam, bütün tadını kaybediyorum.
