Konuştum ne dediğimi bilmeden:
“Şiirimiz var bizim
Ölmeyeceğiz işte tarihten.”
Şiir faydasızdır.[1] Bildiğim kadarıyla bu hüküm kültürümüzde genel bir düşüncedir. Dünyayı CEO’lar ve avukatlar yönetiyor. Polis mülkiyeti koruyor ve huzuru sağlıyor; bir de televizyon dizilerine malzeme sunuyor. Sporcular, rock ve sinema yıldızları tonlarca para kazanıyorlar ve dergilerin magazin bölümlerine malzeme sağlıyorlar. Peki, ya şairler? Kimin umurunda! 2003 yılında, Poetry dergisine, şiirin çehresini değiştireceği farz edilerek büyük miktarda bir ödül verildiğinde Newsweek dergisi “Sinemasız, tiyatrosuz, roman ve müziksiz bir dünya tasavvur edilemez fakat şiirsiz bir dünya hayal edilmek zorunda değildir,” demişti. Ama beklenildiği gibi, şiirin çehresi değişmedi. 2002 yılındaki “Halkın Sanata Katılım Anketi”ne göre ABD’deki insanların %14’ü şiir okuyor ki bu oldukça bonkör bir rakam gibi geliyor. Google Trends’deki sanat/eğlence yönelimleri ile şiiri kıyaslayacak olursak bu oldukça açık olarak görülüyor. Şiir kamuoyu gündemini pek hareketlendirmiyor. Şiirin tek faydası bir avuç insana, fildişi bir kulede eğlenceden ırak ilgilerinin sonsuz bir geri dönüşümünü yaparak günlerini geçirme ayrıcalığı vermesi.
Şiir tarih ve dünyayla çelişir
Tuhaftır, bu durum sadece şiir okurlarına has değil. Şiir yazanlar da sık sık aynı durumda gibi görünüyor. Mesela geçenlerde Yale Siyasal Birliğindeki “Şiirin Faydası Nedir?” başlıklı konuşmasında beğenilen bir şair ve bilim insanı olan Meena Alexander faydasızlığı avantaj olarak sundu. Başlıktaki soruya cevap verirken şöyle beyan etti fikrini: “Hiçbir şey, söyleyecek hiçbir şeyim olmadığını düşünüyorum.” Sonra da bu tepkisini sonu şöyle biten bir şiire irca etti:
“Uzak durarak baktım ona
Konuştum ne dediğimi bilmeden:
“Şiirimiz var bizim
Ölmeyeceğiz işte tarihten.”
Öyleyse şiir tarih ve dünyayla çelişir. Sebep-sonuç zincirinin dışındadır, hatta akıl yürütmenin de. (“Konuştum ne dediğimi bilmeden”)[2] “Derinliğine hissedileni ve özünde söylenemez olanı görmek için,” diyor Alexander, şiire bakarız. Şiirin işi, faydalı olmayana, dünyaya ait olmayana değer biçmektir. Şiir tam da tarihî/ ekonomik/ politik olmadığı için değerlidir çünkü sebep-sonuç dünyasının bir parçası değildir.
Elbette, Alexander’ın “derinliğine hissedilen” gibi acı verici ifade kalıplarına dayanılmadan bile bunların hepsi tanıdıktır. Shelley’in “Şiir Savunması” tarzında romantikler; daha çok hiciv, siyaset ya da halis müstehcenle ilgilenen Pope, Swift ve Rochester Kontu John Wilmot’un aksine şiirin içsel gerçeğin kendiliğinden lirik ifadesi olduğunda ısrar ettiler. Romantikler kazandı, hiciv ve müstehcenlik kaybetti. Ve şimdi, nesiller sonra, kendiliğindenlik biraz bayatlamış görünse de “şiir” aynı lirik duyguları, aynı içsel hakikati doğurmaya yelteniyor.
“Ortak insanlık tarihimizde, dünyanın belirli parçalarında şair ve de şarkıcıların yasaklandığı zamanlar olagelmiştir,” diyor Alexander.
Şiir faydasız özü nedeniyle faydalıdır
Ama niçin? Korkulacak ne var? Tam olarak şu: Şiirin serbest bıraktığı ele avuca gelmez öz benliğin gücü – kanun ve tüzükle asla sınırlanamayacak olan arzular. Bu insanlığın gücüdür, hayatımızın su terazisi. Şiir, öyleyse öteden beri hep devrimci olmuştur. Şiir tekil anlamından dolayı değil, faydasız özü nedeniyle faydalıdır.
Bu elbette saçma. Şair veya yazarlara zulmedildiğinde bunun sebebi genel olarak tiranlık ile şiir arasındaki kimi soyut çelişkiler değildir. Zulmedilen şairlerin tiranın duymak istemeyeceği belli şeyleri söylemesi yüzündendir. Anna Akhmatova, şiirleri açıkça Stalin karşıtı olduğu için zulme uğradı, şair olduğu için değil. Aksine Pound ve Mussolini gül gibi geçindiler. Vitor Jara Allende’nin yanında saf tuttuğu için katledildi, fakat Britanya İmparatorluğu Kipling’le bir sorun yaşamadı.
Burada işin aslı şiirin şiir olarak bilfiil faydasız olmasıdır. Çünkü şiir, şiir olarak bir hiçtir. Bağlamı eksik bir fayda ve anlama sahip temel bir “şiir” olmaması, Miles Davis ve Miley Cyrus’un seslerine derinlik katabilen veya katması gereken temel bir “müzik” olması daha fazla değildir. Keats ve Shelley, belki de tarihe içe-dönen lirik bir alternatif keşfetmekle meşgul oldular. Fakat Dr. Seuss daha çok halkı güldürmeye uğraşıyordu. Langston Hughes eğlendirmek ve eğitmek için yazdı. Şüphesiz tarihle şiir arasında asla keskin bir dönüş yapamazdı çünkü pek çok şiirinde tarihin, bilhassa Amerikan ırkçılık tarihinin, kişiliğiyle nasıl iç içe geçtiğine kafa yordu. Ve sonra ölümsüz dizeleriyle Nicki Minaj var: “Tüm bu kahpeler oğullarım… Kamışım olsaydı çıkarıp işerdim üstlerine.”[3] Şiir dünyayı kurtarmak zorunda değildir. O sadece (tam olarak) sidik yarışıdır.
İnsanlar “şiirden” “şiir” olarak konuştuklarında genellikle Dr. Seuss ya da Nicki Minaj’ı düşünmezler. Ve Kipling veya Langston Hughes’u da, belki de en bilindik şairler olmalarına rağmen, nadiren düşünürler. Bunun yerine, popüler bilinçte şiir Ölü Ozanlar Derneği’nin verdiği esin ve tumturaklı yüceltme ile eşdeğerdir. Çünkü Alexander gibi insanlar söylediği şeyden ziyade olduğu şeyden dolayı önemli sayılan bir temel şiir miti yaratmaya çalışmışlardır.
Bu yüzden, şimdiye kadar çoktan “Şiirin Faydası Nedir?” sorusunu sormayı bırakmamız ve yerine “Bu Şiirin Faydası Nedir?” diye sormaya başlamamız gerekiyordu. Bazı durumlarda belki de varlığından haberdar olmadığımız faydalarını bulacağız. Ve çoğu durumda şöyle cevap vereceğiz: “Hiçbir şey; bu şiir –genel olarak şiir değil, fakat bu şiir– işe yaramazdır. Boş verelim ona, daha fazla canımızı sıkmasın.”
